Kyoto Weather

The city of Kyoto was the capital of Japan and the Emperor’s place of residence till 1868 when the capital was shifted to Tokyo.

The word Kyoto means “Capital City” and though Kyoto is not the capital anymore the city lives up to its name because of its immense importance as a business centre.

Situated amidst the mountains of Western Honshu, Kyoto is a very beautiful city. The former capital was at the height of its fame and fortune when the Emperor ruled the country from here and its myriad architectural landmarks like palaces, temples and shrines were built mainly in this period. Kyoto was the only city that was spared in the devastating World War 2 bombings.

Kyoto is situated on the middle-western region of the island of Honshu. The city is surrounded on three sides by mountains known as Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama, with altitudes of about 1000 meters above sea level. Due to the surrounding mountains on all sides, Kyoto is known for its muggy suffocating summer nights with very little air movement.

Annual Temperature- The average annual temperature is 5.6°C. In the winters the average temperature is between 10 degree centigrade and -2degree centigrade. Winters can get pretty cold with temperature dropping as low as -10 degree centigrade.

Summers are also pretty warm with summer nights in Kyoto city being particularly stifling. Summer temperatures in the Kyoto Prefecture are known to hit highs of 39 degree centigrade.

Annual Rainfall- Annual rainfall is 545.4 mm. It rains continuously during the rainy season that is the moths of June and July. The prefecture is witness to four distinct seasons.

Suitable attire in Kyoto

Wearing light clothing with short sleeves is advisable in the summer. Most places have air conditioning so one needs to be careful that one does not get too cold. The nights are humid as are the days, and almost equally sultry.

In the winters you will need a warm coat though most places indoors have central hearing. Gloves are needed when riding a bicycle as it gets really cold riding down windy streets.

The beautiful city of Kyoto is a place of extreme temperatures. The climate can be quite different in different cities of the prefecture but being armed suitable clothing will make your stay in Kyoto more enjoyable as well as memorable.
